BEIJING: The Malaysian embassy on Tuesday confirmed a Malaysian was detained by the Chinese police for suspected robbery at a luxury watch store in the famous tourist attraction of Wang Fujing here Monday.

“We have received information from the Chinese police that the suspect is a Malaysian,” Tan Beng Yeow, a counsellor at the Malaysian embassy in Beijing, told Bernama when contacted. Beijing police on its Chinese Twitter-like Weibo official account confirmed that the suspect, a Malaysian, named Moi Kit Leng, 38, was detained on suspicion of robbery.


Tan said the embassy would contact Moi’s family and cooperate fully with the authorities. Local media had reported that the man who was wearing a mask and “armed” with a black toy gun had stolen 11 watches worth more than 3 million yuan (RM1.7 million) on Monday evening at a Cartier store in Wang Fujing. The man was arrested within 22 minutes.
